Training of Secondary Teachers in Displacement-affected Communities in the IGAD Region Module: PEDAGOGY Teachers Manual

The Modules compiled here are designed to complement the work of member states in the training of teachers primarily in the refugee and host community secondary schools in the IGAD region. They can also be useful, we believe, for the improvement of teachers’ skills in areas of the countries.

In the schools and countries where the modules are used (Ethiopia, Sudan, and Uganda), they have received warmly. As a result, ministries of education in all member states have requested more training of teachers using the modules in both the pilot and non-pilot projects.

The training covered four modules: pedagogy, ICT, psychosocial support, and life skills. The training was accompanied by selecting the service providing international consulting firm (Participate GmbH), national consultation in each country to build consensus, establishment of a national coordination mechanism under the leadership of the ministry of education in respective countries, the recruitment of the national coordinators for the three countries and conducting a series of formative and summative (certificate awarding ceremonies) as well as regular meetings between IGAD, GIZ, the consulting firm, and the national coordinators. At the end of the pilot initiative a regional experience-sharing workshop was held in Addis Ababa, which was attended by a select of trained teachers, senior education experts from all the seven IGAD member states (both pilot and non-pilot countries), the IGAD secretariat, GIZ, and other partners.
