Gender Assessment of the Land Sector in South Sudan

As a new country emerging from decades of war, South Sudan has tried to establish legal and policy frameworks and institutions of land governance from scratch. The surge and demand for land, especially in the urban and peri-urban areas as many South Sudanese return to the country and need resettlement, coupled with investment interests in large-scale agri- culture and oil extraction, calls for a more frugal and equitable approach to land administration and management. The government’s ability to effectively man- age land tenure systems, resettle Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees, serve the vulnerable in society, and manage land disputes, as well as investment interests, is paramount in tackling poverty, reducing conflicts, and ushering prosperity for the country.
