On International Migrants Day, we reflect on the dynamic nature of migration in our region, where over 3.5 million individuals are on the move, experiencing an annual growth of 7%. While numerous people seek improved livelihoods through migration, the increasing trend of climate-induced migration calls for prompt and decisive action.

IGAD has been at the forefront of addressing migration issues within the region through the implementation of the IGAD Migration Policy Framework. The Framework focusses on efforts to find ways to enhance the benefits of migration for the development of the IGAD region through the development of “a common strategy for implementing migration policy among IGAD Member States that reflects harmonization of laws, standards, procedures, information dissemination and sharing, compilation of statistics, production of documents, and efficient use of resources.

In addition, IGAD Member States adopted the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons in the IGAD Region, and the Protocol of Transhumance aimed at promoting safe, regular, and orderly migration within the region. IGAD is investing in developing policies aimed at promoting safe, regular, and orderly migration within the region well aware that well managed migration is beneficial to alleviate poverty and promote development through remittances.

As we commemorate International Migrants Day in the IGAD region, let us reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity, respect for human rights, and the pursuit of sustainable development. By embracing the rich tapestry of migration, we can build a future where diversity is celebrated, and the potential of every individual is harnessed for the collective progress of the IGAD community.
