H.E Amb. (Eng.) Mahboub Maalim was received by Her Excellency Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, President of the Republic of Mauritius on the 5 January 2017 at the State house in Réduit, Mauritius.

Their Excellencies commended the relations between IGAD and Mauritius as a very good example of south south cooperation. Mauritius indeed benefits of IGAD-led programmes such as the Eastern and Southern Africa-Indian Ocean  Maritime Security programme. IGAD is also part of the High Level Group with collective responsibility together with COMESA,EAC, IOC and SADC, on the 11th EDF cross-regional envelopes (nearly EUR 800 million) where Mauritius avails of additional support.

The outcome of the Nairobi High Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (GPEDC) , held on 30 Nov ember – 1 December 2016, was also noted where IGAD’s participation resulted in its successful submission of the P.R.I.D.E (Platform for Regional Integration Development Effectiveness) initiative to the GPEDC. Her Excellency the President thanked IGAD for the inclusion of the Open University of Mauritius into the initiative, together with the Djibouti Institute for Diplomatic and Strategic Studies,  with the role assigned to Open University to launch the virtual university on regional integration  for Africa. Open University will thus make available its e-learning platform to Africa , and foresees joint operations with the Djibouti Institute in the context of the IGAD-led initiative. Affordable, accessible , and accredited higher education is  a central pillar for the future of Africa and this  initiative with the Open University is  acknowledged as  another example of the various dimensions where south south cooperation can evolve,

Her Excellency the President also shared with the IGAD Delegation her vision as the co-Chair , with Mexico, of the SDG 6 “Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.” and acknowledged the role of Amb. Maalim in the water sector in the Eastern and Horn of Africa.
