IGAD hands over ICT equipment to the Institute of Statistics of Djibouti

May 9, 2024, (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): In a significant stride towards bolstering Djibouti’s data infrastructure, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), with support from the government of Germany, has delivered a suite of ICT equipment to the Institute of Statistics of the Republic of Djibouti. This equipment aims to fortify Djibouti’s capacity in managing migration statistics and harnessing its strategic position as a pivotal migration corridor.

At the official handover ceremony, Mme. Fatiha Alwan, the Director of IGAD’s Health and Social Development Division, representing the IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, presented the ICT equipment to Mr. Ibrahim Abdi, Director General of the Institute of Statistics of the Republic of Djibouti, in the presence of Amb. Dr. Heike Fuller, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Djibouti. The event was also attended by Mrs. Kokebe Haile Gabriel, a Representative from GIZ, and distinguished guests, underscoring the collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing Djibouti’s data capabilities.

Mme. Fatiha Alwan, in her remarks, highlighted the significance of the equipment handover, emphasising IGAD’s steadfast commitment to equipping the region with the requisite tools for tackling migration-related challenges. She stressed the pivotal role of the dedicated unit for migration analysis in harmonising and enhancing data capacities pertaining to migration—a critical aspect for informed policy-making and humanitarian interventions.

Dr. Heike Fuller, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Djibouti, lauded Djibouti’s pivotal role in migration management and acknowledged the country’s exemplary efforts in data collection, setting a precedent for other Horn of Africa countries.

Mr. Ibrahim Abdi, Director General of the Institute of  Statistics of the Republic of Djibouti, expressed gratitude for the support received, foreseeing a transformative impact on their operations.

The initiative builds upon IGAD’s ongoing efforts since 2019 to enhance migration and displacement statistics within the region, aiming to elevate the production and utilisation of quality statistics—a cornerstone for informed decision-making and regional collaboration.
