Feb 4, 2020 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) joins the people and Government of Kenya to condole the second president in the history of the Republic of Kenya, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, following his passing early this morning in Nairobi.
A statement issued by the IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, recalled the pivotal role of the former president in the formation of IGAD as one of the Founding Fathers in 1986.
‘The late Mzee Moi will greatly be remembered for environmental, peace and security efforts in many parts of Africa’, the statement reads, pointing out specially to the leading role he played in IGAD ‘for the return of Somalia to the community of nations and independence of South Sudan’.
On behalf of IGAD Member States, the Secretariat and my own behalf, I send my sincere condolences to the family, friends, the people and the Government of Kenya’, Dr. Workneh stated, adding that ‘IGAD will forever be indebted to him for his valuable contribution of the region.
