7 September 2020, (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) sends its condolences to the Government and people of Sudan over the loss of lives and properties due to the recent rising floodwaters and heavy rainfalls.
IGAD sends sincere condolences to the families, the people and government of Sudan following the recent rising floodwaters and heavy rainfalls which resulted in the loss of lives and properties.
It is indeed very sad news to learn of the scales of the damages in the capital city of Khartoum and many other parts of the country, and IGAD shares the grief with the brothers and sisters for the losses incurred.
IGAD praises the efforts by the Government of the Republic of Sudan in the current situation during which a state of emergency was declared.
The three-month state of emergency declared by the Government shows how serious the situation is on the ground and is also a testimony that the Government is taking it as seriously as it deserves.
IGAD is confident that the Government and people of Sudan will overcome these difficult times.
IGAD calls on Member States, development partners and funding institutions to provide support to the country.
Through its Specialised Institution, the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), IGAD issued a Heavy Rainfall and Flood Alert for Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan on 18 August, 2020. ICPAC is also predicting wetter than usual conditions over northern and southwestern parts of Sudan in September 2020; thus, our call to the government and people of Sudan for further vigilance.
