30-03-2017, Djibouti: The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) H.E. Amb (Eng.) Mahboub Maalim signed a grant agreement valued at 36 million Euros this afternoon with Dr. Ralf-Mathias Mohs, Director, East Africa Division – Federal Republic of Germany at the IGAD Secretariat in Djibouti.
The German government will provide the 36 million Euros to strengthen the drought migration nexus. The funds will be broken down into two parts – 20 million Euros for financial cooperation and 16 million Euros for technical cooperation.
These funds will go towards strengthening IGAD’s coordination role in the Member States’ migration policy, management coordination in line with the Regional Migration Policy Framework (RMPF), as well as other continental and international frameworks, and strengthen the IGAD Regional Consultative Process and IGAD’s positioning within the global and regional processes, such as the New York Declaration on Global Compact on Migration and Refugees and the Khartoum Process.
IGAD’s capabilities and role within the Regional Migration Fund will be enhanced including capacities for knowledge management by creating a systemized method of best practices and monitoring of best practices and performance compliance with the national and regional migration policies during the implementation of the program.
IGAD will also be able to strengthen its facilitation role to promote both comprehensive regional cooperation on all migration routes and effective cross-border cooperation among the Member States.
The two organizations officially signed the agreement at the conclusion of a 3-day consultation process between the attending experts on March 28-30, 2017 in Djibouti.
