Arab League Delegate’s Courtesy Visit to IGAD

12-02-2017, Djibouti – The Executive Secretary of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Amb (Eng) Mahboub Maalim this morning received the First Counselor Dr. Zeid Al Sabban, Director – Horn of Africa & Sudan Department, League of Arab States to enhance existing relations between the two organisations.

The Arab League and IGAD share member states like Somalia, Sudan and Djibouti hence the two organizations are key players and have similar mandates to achieve peace, stability and economic cooperation and integration to the respective member states.

Amb Maalim gave a hearty welcome to Dr. Zeid and expressed his gratitude for the consideration of IGAD by the Arab League as a partner and driver through which the needs of the people in the Horn of Africa can be met and supported to combat drought and achieve peace and security as well as economic cooperation.

Dr. Zeid expressed the importance of the Arab League leveraging on IGAD’s experience and presence as an important ‘door’ to the Horn of Africa through its already existing programmes and projects that have been implemented effectively and efficiently.

The two delegations agreed to enhance and enrich the existing Memorandum of Understanding towards a practical relationship and look into identifying mechanisms through which the two organizations can complement each other in making the Horn of Africa safer, stable and prosperous.

Also in attendance were IGAD directors of Agriculture and Environment, Economic and Social Development and Administration and Finance.
