This week in Tokyo, Japan, IGAD’s Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, led a highly successful mission aimed at strengthening partnerships and mutual interests between IGAD and Japan.

The delegation held key meetings with Toyota Tsusho, Sumitomo Corporation, and Toppan Holdings, exploring collaboration and investment opportunities to drive economic growth and market expansion in IGAD member states.

Discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) focused on potential development cooperation to support regional initiatives.

A pivotal meeting with Ambassador Shimizu Shinsuke, Japanโ€™s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, set the stage for a strategic working lunch with Ms. Kamikawa Yoko, Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. This 90-minute session addressed regional peace and security, particularly the severe suffering in Sudan, and emphasized IGADโ€™s role in fostering inclusive societies and sustainable peace.

Ms. Kamikawa commended IGADโ€™s dedication to sustainable peace, gender-responsive policies, equality, and womenโ€™s rights within the region.
