Bishoftu, 10 September 2014 – IGAD Security Sector Program (ISSP) conducted a three days regional workshop to validate the IGAD Maritime Security training Manual commissioned by the Office from 2-4 September 2014 in Bishoftu, Ethiopia.  The meeting was officially opened by Ambassador Tewolde Gebremeskel, the Director of Peace & Security Division of IGAD and was co-presided by Commander Abebe Muluneh, the Head of ISSP.   Mr. Daoud A. Alwan, the Head of Maritime Security Pillar at ISSP, chaired the meeting.

The aim of the Training Manual was to provide stakeholders, operational bodies, interested parties and individuals from both the IGAD sub-region and International Community with a comprehensive and concise body of information in relation to sub-regional maritime security issues and associated training.

A total of 25 participants were drawn from all IGAD Member States.  Officials from Institutions such as the Maritime Affairs Authority, Maritime Academy, Maritime law enforcement, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Justice, Prosecution Counsel, and Ministry of Transport were in attendance.

The Consultant, who developed the Manual gave a detailed overview of the Manual after which, participants critically examined and went through the manual in detail.  They gave their recommendations and further analysis on the training manual for its finalization.

The workshop was adjourned by handing out certificate of participation preceded by a closing remark from the Head of ISSP, Commander Abebe, who has expressed his thanks to the participants, the experts, the staff, and the Government of Ethiopia. (END)
