November 22, 2023 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, acknowledges the vital role of dialogue and negotiation in addressing grievances and resolving conflicts, essential for achieving enduring peace in our region. IGAD has been closely engaged in the ongoing dialogue between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA).

Leveraging upon IGAD’s experience in mediating similar situations, the Executive Secretary understands that in any negotiation process, there are inevitable periods of challenge and complexity.

Dr. Workneh commends both negotiating teams for engaging in peaceful dialogue to resolve their differences and expresses gratitude to the IGAD technical team and the observers, notably the representatives of the US and Norway, for their support at the talks. He further extended his appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Tanzania for hosting the talks.

The Executive Secretary appeals to all involved parties to uphold their commitment to the peace process in the best interest of the people of Ethiopia.

In conclusion, Dr. Workneh is optimistic that the two sides will initiate a new round of talks to address and resolve the remaining issues.

IGAD will continue to remain seized of the situation and stands ready to provide unwavering support to both sides in their pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the situation.
