January 28, 2026 (Djibouti, Djibouti): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr Workneh Gebeyehu expresses deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Jonglei State, Republic of South Sudan, where renewed violence has resulted in civilian displacement and heightened humanitarian risks.

The Executive Secretary is alarmed by reports of actions and inflammatory rhetoric that risk further escalation and further undermine the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS). Such developments endanger civilian populations, especially women and children, and erode the foundations of the peace process.

H.E. Dr Workneh strongly condemns all forms of violence against civilians and notes with concern reported violations of the Permanent Ceasefire, which continue to weaken trust and stability.

The Executive Secretary calls on all South Sudanese parties to exercise maximum restraint, immediately de-escalate tensions, and fully comply with their obligations under the R-ARCSS, including adherence to ceasefire arrangements and the resolution of differences through dialogue.

H.E. Dr Workneh reaffirms IGAD’s commitment to supporting the people and Government of South Sudan in advancing lasting peace, stability, and national reconciliation, in close coordination with regional and international partners.
