IGAD Statement on Africa Day 2025
Theme: “Revisiting Our History, Shaping Our Future”
AU Theme of the Year: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparation”
25 May 2025

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) joins the African Union, Member States, and all Africans in marking Africa Day 2025, commemorating the founding of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963.

This year’s theme calls us to reflect on our history and recommit to a future shaped by unity, justice, and shared progress. IGAD supports the AU’s focus on reparative justice for Africans and people of African descent—a vital step in redressing historical injustices and building equitable societies.

On this occasion, IGAD reaffirms its commitment to:

  • Regional integration and economic cooperation
  • Peace and stability in the Horn of Africa
  • Social and climate justice
  • African-led processes of healing and reparation

IGAD calls on all partners—governments, civil society, youth, and the diaspora—to work together for a just, united, and resilient Africa.

Happy Africa Day!
Long live African unity.
Long live IGAD–AU cooperation.
