Djibouti, Friday, 29 November 2024: Today, the IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan, the Interim Chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), and the Chairperson of the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) briefed H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), on the status of the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

H.E. Dr Workneh commended the Special Envoy and the two IGAD institutions for their briefings and reaffirmed IGAD’s determination to continue supporting South Sudan in its pursuit of the full implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement, with the ultimate goal of achieving sustainable peace.

In this regard, Dr. Workneh emphasised the need for close coordination between IGAD and all stakeholders in the unification of forces, the constitution-making process, and preparations for conducting free, fair, and democratic elections in December 2026.

IGAD calls on the international community to continue providing support to IGAD institutions, namely RJMEC and CTSAMVM, to enable them to discharge their respective mandates during the extended period, as stipulated in the R-ARCSS.

Under the leadership of the IGAD Executive Secretary, the respective IGAD institutions agreed to meet periodically to review the status of the implementation of the R-ARCSS.

IGAD remains fully engaged in the South Sudan peace process and is committed to continuing its collaboration with national, regional, and international partners to achieve lasting peace and stability in the Republic of South Sudan.
