November 30, 2025 (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia):The IGAD Media Awards 2025 concluded this evening at the Skylight Hotel, marking a powerful celebration of journalism that is shaping climate action and strengthening public understanding across the Horn of Africa. The ceremony brought together journalists, creators, government representatives, and development partners for a night dedicated to stories that inspire resilience and elevate community voices.
Hosted in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Awards highlighted the country’s continued commitment to regional cooperation and media development. The Chief Guest on the occasion, H.E. Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, delivered the opening remarks. He underscored the urgency of this year’s climate theme, stating:
“This theme is a reminder that climate change has become a global concern, particularly for our region, the Horn of Africa.”
Quoting Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, he added,
“Our journey has been tested by drought, conflict, and global shocks. These recurring climatic shockwaves oscillating between extreme drought and devastating floods continue to test our resilience.”
His remarks reinforced Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting storytellers who bring truth, context, and courage to the climate conversation.
The event also honoured the leadership of H.E. Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, IGAD Executive Secretary, whose vision continues to strengthen the partnership between media, policy, and community action. In his message, he praised the winners and nominees for their vital contribution to public awareness and regional stability, noting:
“Journalists are the frontline guardians of truth in a time of climate uncertainty. Their stories illuminate the realities our communities face and inspire the solutions our region urgently needs. As IGAD marks 40 years, we remain firmly committed to empowering media as partners in development, resilience, and integration.”
The winning works spanned investigative reports, films, photography, audio storytelling, digital innovation, and climate data narratives — all reflecting the creativity, courage, and dedication of media professionals across the IGAD region.
