New York, September 25, 2025 – On the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) participated in a high-level Ministerial Meeting on Joint Efforts for De-escalation in Sudan. The meeting was convened by the European Union (EU), the African Union (AU), France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, joined international partners in calling for urgent and coordinated action to bring an end to the conflict in Sudan and safeguard the country’s future.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary underscored the centrality of an inclusive, Sudanese-led peace process as the only path to lasting stability. He emphasized that any sustainable solution must be firmly anchored in a credible transition to civilian rule, ensuring that the voices of all Sudanese are represented in shaping the country’s future.

“The people of Sudan cannot wait any longer. Their future depends on our unity of purpose and immediate action. IGAD stands resolute in working with partners to support an inclusive, Sudanese-led transition that delivers peace, dignity, and stability,” said Dr. Workneh.

The meeting reaffirmed the international community’s shared responsibility to coordinate mediation efforts, prevent further escalation, and support Sudan’s return to peace and civilian governance.
