New York, September 25, 2025– The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) today officially opened its Permanent Observer Mission Office to the United Nations (UN) in New York. The inauguration was led by the IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu.
This milestone marks a new era of engagement for IGAD, strengthening its presence within the UN system and amplifying the voice of the IGAD region on global platforms. Through this office, IGAD will deepen its advocacy and cooperation on issues critical to the Horn of Africa, including peace and security, climate resilience, humanitarian response, health, and sustainable development.
IGAD’s Permanent Observer to the UN, Mr. Cherinet Hariffo, who has faithfully served in this role for the past year, will continue to represent the organisation at the UN. He will ensure that the priorities of the IGAD region are effectively articulated, advanced, and addressed in the global policy arena.
Speaking at the inauguration, H.E. Dr. Workneh highlighted IGAD’s vision for building stronger partnerships:
