September 3, 2025 (Djibouti, Djibouti) – The Executive Secretary of IGAD, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, expresses his deepest condolences to the families and communities affected by the devastating landslide in the Republic of Sudan’s North Darfur State, which has claimed more than 1,000 lives and destroyed an entire village in the Marra Mountains.

According to local sources, the disaster struck in Tarasin, North Darfur State, leaving widespread destruction and deepening the suffering of the affected communities.

This tragedy comes at a time when the people of the Republic of Sudan are already facing immense hardship as a result of the ongoing conflict since April 2023, which has caused severe loss of life and livelihoods.

On behalf of IGAD, H.E. Dr. Workneh conveys heartfelt sympathies to the people of the Republic of Sudan, particularly to the bereaved families and affected communities. He reaffirms IGAD’s solidarity with the Republic of Sudan in this moment of compounded grief and underscores the urgent need for peace, unity, and resilience, while also stressing the importance of facilitating timely humanitarian assistance to those most in need.
