Djibouti, September 3, 2025 – The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, will lead the IGAD delegation to the Africa Climate Summit 2, taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

At the Summit, the Executive Secretary will engage with IGAD Member States, the African Union, and international partners to advance the region’s climate agenda and reaffirm IGAD’s commitment to coordinated action on resilience, adaptation, and sustainable development.

As part of its strong presence at the Summit, IGAD will host a dedicated Pavilion which will serve as a hub for knowledge exchange, policy dialogue, and regional collaboration. The Pavilion will also be the venue for most IGAD-led side events, covering priority themes including:

  • Blue Economy – Harnessing aquatic resources for sustainable growth and resilience
  • Drought Resilience – Advancing the IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI)
  • Climate Applications and Adaptation – Scaling innovative tools for climate risk management
  • Food Security – Addressing the impact of climate change on agriculture and nutrition
  • Water Resources – Strengthening sustainable management of groundwater and transboundary water systems

Speaking ahead of the Summit, H.E. Dr. Workneh emphasized:
Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, and for the IGAD region it is an existential issue. The Africa Climate Summit is an opportunity to amplify our collective voice, forge stronger partnerships, and deliver solutions that ensure resilience and prosperity for our people.
