February 15, 2023 (ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, arrives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to lead an IGAD delegation to the 36th African Union Summit.

The Summit will be held at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa on February 18th and 19th. The African Union theme of the year 2023 is “The Year of AfCFTA: Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area Implementation.”

IGAD Executive Secretary is expected to meet strategic partners, high-ranking officials from the A.U. and Regional Economic Communities of the continent, Government representatives, development partners, and other institution heads to deliberate on matters of mutual interest.

The IGAD delegation to AU Summit aspires to find and focus on shared concerns regarding regional integration, economic development, and peace and security to build a more sustainable and resilient region for all and future generations.

The 42nd Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council taking place on the 15th and 16th of February precedes the 36th African Union Summit. During the opening session, Dr. Workneh noted that he was delighted to be at the opening ceremony of the 42nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union together with Ministers of Foreign Affairs from the continent and Heads of Regional Economic Communities. “It is critical that Africa accelerates the implementation of the work of the African Continental Free Trade Area and related issues,” he added.

The delegation will be in Addis Ababa from the 15th to the 20th of February, 2023.
