Addis Ababa, 28 July 2025 – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), led by Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, convened a high-level Ministerial Meeting focused on tackling food security challenges and opportunities in the region.

Held on the sidelines of the UN Food Security Summit, the meeting brought together Ministers responsible for Agriculture from IGAD Member States and key partners @AGFUNDProgram and @CropTrust. Discussions centered on coordinated responses to hunger, improving agricultural resilience, and building sustainable food systems amid climate shocks and recurrent droughts.

Opening the session, H.E. Dr. Workneh reaffirmed IGAD’s founding vision: “IGAD was created to confront drought and desertification, with the understanding that true prosperity begins where no one goes hungry. This meeting reflects that commitment and our shared responsibility to safeguard the region’s food security.”

The Ministers underscored the need for stronger regional cooperation to enhance seed systems, scale up climate-smart agriculture, and leverage digital finance to support smallholder farmers.

On the margins of the meeting, IGAD signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AG FUND and Crop Trust to reinforce collaboration in these critical areas, marking a concrete step toward a food-secure and resilient Horn of Africa.
