November 18-19, 2025 (Kampala, Uganda): The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has taken a significant step toward creating its first-ever Regional Anthem following the successful conclusion of a two-day Member States Consultations Meeting held at the IGAD Mission Offices in Naguru, Kampala.
The meeting brought together technical experts from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, International Relations, Culture, and Heritage across IGAD Member States. The delegates collaborated with the IGAD Secretariat to review, discuss, and shape the emerging ideas that will define the region’s first unifying anthem.
In his opening remarks delivered on behalf of the IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Austine Opata, Head of the Communications Unit, emphasized the collective nature of the task ahead.
“Your contributions will ensure this anthem reflects not one view, but the collective voice of the IGAD family. Let us craft lyrics in which every Member State sees itself, every citizen feels recognised, and our shared history, present, and future are heard.” he stated.
Throughout the consultations, participants examined proposed thematic directions, shared cultural insights, and provided linguistic and contextual perspectives essential for shaping a truly inclusive regional anthem. Delegates worked in plenary and thematic groups to ensure the anthem reflects regional diversity while capturing themes of peace, unity, resilience, and prosperity.
By the close of the meeting, IGAD successfully consolidated Member States’ contributions into the first draft of the IGAD Anthem lyrics, marking an important milestone in the anthem development process. IGAD will continue harmonizing and refining the input received, paving the way for the next stages of validation and formal consideration through the established IGAD structures.
Delivering the closing remarks on behalf of the IGAD Executive Secretary, Ms. Joselyn Bigirwa commended Member States for their engagement and collaboration.
“Your commitment demonstrates the strength of our shared vision. Together, we are shaping a regional legacy—an anthem that will echo the unity and aspirations of our people across the Horn of Africa,” she noted.
IGAD extends its appreciation to all Member States for their active participation and their dedication to advancing a cultural symbol that will represent the region on regional and global platforms.
With the first draft now completed, IGAD moves confidently toward the next phase of developing a unifying anthem that embodies the organization’s mission and the collective identity of its Member States.
