September 3rd 2025 (MOGADISHU, Somalia): The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), through its Land Governance Unit, held the inaugural bi-annual meeting of Land Sector Actors from 2nd – 3rd September 2025 in Mogadishu, Somalia. The meeting plays a key role in building synergies and coordination among the relevant national stakeholders and support in garnering political support for the land sector reform processes. The meeting also identified opportunities and challenges for the sustainable engagement among the key land sector actors towards ensuring accountability for delivery of inclusive land administration services. This milestone event brought together participants including Members of Parliament, various government agencies and Ministries, Civil Society organisations, Development Partners and UN agencies among others.
On his official opening speech, Hon Minister Asad Abdulkadir Mohamed, State Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation stressed the importance of this bi-annual meeting for Somalia and encouraged all stakeholders to actively contribute and play their role in the establishment of the land sector coordination platform.
The meeting further revised and discussed the key modalities and Terms of Reference for the establishment of national land sector coordination platform. The main role of this multi-stakeholder platform will be to develop and operationalise the coordination mechanisms across sectors and establish functional approaches for the purposes of steering forward land reforms based on identified priority policy issues and highlighting persistent challenges. The platform realises strong political commitment and ensures effective and regular engagement of stakeholders through leveraging local and international support to foster implementation of land reform agendas in Somalia. This will improve the alignment of policies across sectors, facilitate knowledge sharing and management, enhance monitoring and evaluation, ensure accountability, and foster collaborative efforts in land governance at all levels. This bi-annual meeting in Somalia reaffirms IGAD’s commitment to building a region where land governance is harmonised, inclusive and responsive to national and regional land tenure challenges.
