October 8, 2023 (NAIVASHA, Kenya): The IGAD Committee of Ambassadors and IGAD Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Taskforce jointly met, reviewed and validated a Common IGAD Position and Regional Plan of Action on the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The meeting was presided over by Amb. Hassan Omar Mohamed, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti, Chair of IGAD; Amb. Moi Lemoshira, representing Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora affairs, Republic of Kenya; and, Amb. Mohamed Ali Guyo, IGAD Special Envoy to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Common IGAD Position and the Regional Plan of Action provide an important framework that shall lay a firm foundation for a coordinated and integrated efforts to accomplish a common objective in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region by leveraging on opportunities, promoting a shared vision and mitigating challenges through multilateral approach.

The meeting resolved to focus on regional cohesion, coordination and cooperation; socio-economic development; maritime and terrestrial matters; and, research, technology, innovation and capacity building.

Further, the meeting agreed to submit validated Common IGAD Position and a Regional Plan of Action to the IGAD Council of Ministers.

The Committee of Ambassadors and the Taskforce members thanked the People and Government of the Republic of Kenya for hosting the meeting. They also extended their appreciation to the European Union, Finland, Italy and Norway for their gracious financial and diplomatic support of the Taskforce’s effort.
