April 25, 2024 (Djibouti, Djibouti) –The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Government of Sweden convened today for the annual meeting, underscoring their commitment to advancing mutual cooperation and regional development. This significant gathering signifies yet another stride forward in the over 37 years partnership between IGAD and Sweden.

Sweden has played a pivotal role in bolstering various initiatives under IGAD’s purview. From peace and security, land governance, drought and resilience to gender and women empowerment, Sweden’s steadfast support has left an indelible mark across critical sectors. Aligned with the Memorandum of Understanding inked in 2020, the meeting served as a platform to evaluate progress, identify hurdles, and chart pathways for future collaboration.

Gathered at the table were senior officials from IGAD and the Swedish Embassy in Ethiopia, led by H.E. Mohamed Abdi Ware, IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary and H.E. Hans Lundquist, the Ambassador of Sweden to Ethiopia, Djibouti, and IGAD. They engaged in a comprehensive review of ongoing projects financed by Sweden. Key initiatives such as the IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI), land governance programs, peace and security and endeavors on advancing gender equality were discussed. Reflective deliberations ensued, spotlighting achievements, lessons learned, and avenues for enhancement.

In his address, the Deputy Executive Secretary, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Ware, representing the IGAD Executive Secretary, underscored the partnership’s pivotal role in addressing regional challenges and realizing common objectives. “Sweden holds significant importance as a partner to IGAD, and we deeply value the contributions made by the Swedish government. Their efforts have not only bolstered our organisation’s capabilities but also benefited our member states, fostering considerable advancements in regional development.” H.E. Mohamed Abdi Ware emphasised.

H.E. Hans Henric Lundquist, reiterated Sweden’s unwavering dedication to bolstering IGAD’s endeavors toward peace, stability, women empowerment, and sustainable development in the region.

The meeting culminated in a constructive exchange on financial matters, encompassing audit findings and institutional development milestones. Both parties reiterated their steadfast commitment to fortifying the partnership and amplifying the impact of their collaborative initiatives.
