A High Level Consultative Workshop will be held on 29-31 October 2007 at the Headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa to consider the progress made since the signature of the Maputo Declaration. The Declaration was signed by representatives of the AU, the RECs and the ACP Secretariat, requesting the EC to support Africa to come with a Global Monitoring for Environment and Security Programme, as an extension of the European GMES Programme. The workshop has the following objectives:
- To review activities undertaken and consolidate the Maputo Declaration
- To further define the GMES Africa concept
- To harmonize the position of RECs, AUC and ACP Secretariat on GMES and discuss GMES budget under EDF 10 Programming
The workshop will also hold a launching ceremony of the AMESD project. AMESD is a follow up of the Preparation for Use of MSG in Africa (PUMA) project, which assisted African countries and four regional centres in Africa with equipment, training on maintenance of equipment and use of MSG data for a multitude of purposes, with a special focus on the Meteorology sector. The AMESD project will help African countries to improve the management of their natural resources and the environment by providing them with appropriate information using state-of-the-art technologies, including Earth Observation and Information and Communication Technologies.
