(IGAD- Juba) A five-member IGAD delegation led by the Executive Secretary, Eng. Mahboub Maalim arrived here this afternoon to witness the proclamation of independence of Africa’s newest nation state, South Sudan tomorrow.
IGAD brokered the protracted negotiations that gave birth to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement [CPA] in January 2005 in Nairobi, which provided the roadmap for socio-political, economic transformation. Largely the implementation of the CPA and its various protocols has been on course with several challenges on the way. However, despite these challenges, the people of South Sudan overwhelming voted for separation during the historic referendum last January leading to the tomorrow’s independence celebrations.
Delegates and dignitaries have been arriving for the big historic day tomorrow that will culminate in the celebrations at the Dr. John Garang Memorial Park in Juba.
The IGAD delegation includes the Director for Peace and Security Division at the Secretariat, Hon. Netsannet Asfaw; the Special Envoy to the Assessment and Evaluation Commission of the CPA based in Khartoum, Amb. Lissane Yohannes; the Information and Documentation Program Manager, Mr. Abdullahi Busuri and the Consultant Editor of IGAD News, Mr. Brazille Musumba.
