New York, September 25, 2025 – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has reinforced its global engagement during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80), advancing the region’s priorities on peace, security, climate resilience, food systems, health, and sustainable development.
IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, led a high-level delegation of IGAD Directors in Peace and Security, Health and Social Development, and Planning, Coordination, and Partnerships. Throughout the mission, IGAD engaged Member States, international partners, and development agencies to mobilise stronger synergies for peace, resilience, and prosperity in the IGAD region.
Strengthening IGAD’s Global Presence
The Executive Secretary inaugurated the IGAD Permanent Observer Mission Office to the United Nations in New York. The office will strengthen IGAD’s visibility within the UN system, amplify the region’s voice, and enhance coordination with international partners on critical issues including peace and security, climate resilience, humanitarian response, health, and development.
Calling for Urgent Action on Sudan
At the Ministerial Meeting on Joint Efforts for De-escalation in Sudan, convened by the EU, AU, France, Germany, and the UK, IGAD joined partners in urging immediate and coordinated efforts to end the war and safeguard Sudan’s future. Dr. Workneh stressed that peace must be Sudanese-led, inclusive, and anchored in a credible transition to civilian rule.
Forging Strategic Partnerships with the UAE
In a bilateral meeting with H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, IGAD explored avenues to strengthen cooperation on peace and security, highlighting the importance of coordinated regional and international partnerships for stability in the Horn of Africa.
Investing in Food Systems Resilience
At the Science Summit on Financing for Food Systems, Dr. Workneh underlined that food security is about people, not just harvests and markets. He called for systemic investment in resilience and reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment through its Climate Centres and the Food Systems Resilience Programme, urging global partners to support long-term solutions.
Advancing Health Sovereignty
Speaking at the Science for Diplomacy side event, the Executive Secretary stressed the need for bold investment in research, innovation, and local medicine production, noting that Africa’s health sovereignty depends on reducing dependence on imported medical products.
Deepening IGAD–U.S. Cooperation
In discussions with Vincent D. Spera, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Bureau of African Affairs, Dr. Workneh reaffirmed the importance of IGAD–U.S. collaboration in advancing peace and stability, with particular focus on Sudan and South Sudan.
