Fourth Session of IGAD Statistics Committee
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) was launched to succeed the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD), established in 1986 to address recurrent drought and related natural disasters that had led to widespread ecological degradation, famine, and economic hardship in the region. Over time, IGAD’s mandate was broadened to include food security, environmental protection, economic cooperation, and political and humanitarian affairs.
