MOGADISHU, Somalia, 16 September 2024 – The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), His Excellency Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, is on an official visit to Mogadishu, Somalia for high-level consultations with the Federal Government of Somalia. This visit underscores IGAD’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the Federal Republic of Somalia, a founding member of the regional bloc, and reinforcing collective efforts to ensure peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa.
During his visit, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu met with the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Their discussions focused on regional peace and security, economic cooperation, and IGAD’s ongoing initiatives in Somalia. President Hassan Sheikh reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to strengthening ties with IGAD for the development of the region.
In a separate meeting with H.E. Ahmed Fiqi, Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Workneh signed an agreement with the Government of Somalia to further enhance IGAD-Somalia relations. A key element of the agreement is the establishment of a Regional Centre of Excellence in Blue Economy, marking a significant milestone for both Somalia and the region.
H.E. Dr. Workneh commended the Federal Republic of Somalia for its strides towards peace and state-building, highlighting the pivotal role Somalia plays in shaping regional stability and security. He also reaffirmed IGAD’s continued support for Somalia’s efforts to address challenges such as countering violent extremism, responding to climate-induced displacement, and fostering inclusive governance.
Speaking about the visit, Dr. Workneh said, “Somalia is not only a founding member of IGAD but also a critical partner in our shared mission to promote peace, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa. We stand with Somalia as it navigates its path towards sustainable peace and prosperity, and we will continue to support the government’s efforts to build a resilient nation.”
In addition to discussing key regional priorities, the IGAD Executive Secretary and the Somali leadership explored avenues for enhancing cooperation on cross-border initiatives that contribute to the broader vision of regional integration.
The visit also provided an opportunity for Dr. Workneh to meet with representatives of IGAD’s Mission office in Somalia, led by the Head of the IGAD Mission to Somalia, Mr. Mohamud Karshe. During the meeting, he expressed his appreciation for their work in implementing IGAD’s regional programmes in collaboration with the Federal Government of Somalia and international partners.
As Somalia continues to progress on its path of recovery and development, IGAD remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the nation through diplomatic and technical assistance. This visit marks another step forward in IGAD’s partnership with Somalia and reaffirms the regional bloc’s dedication to fostering peace, security, and prosperity for all its member states.
