November 2, 2023 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): As we commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Ethiopia Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, which was signed on November 2, 2022, in Pretoria, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), applauded the signatory parties for their unwavering commitment to this historic accord.
“Since the signing of this Ethiopia-led-and-owned agreement in Pretoria exactly one year ago today, we have witnessed a lot of progress as the involved parties have taken substantial steps in pursuit of peace and resolving the conflict. The cessation of hostilities has unquestionably resulted in silencing the guns.,” said Dr Workneh.
While acknowledging the progress achieved to date, the IGAD Executive Secretary underscores the urgency of expediting the agreement’s full implementation and calls upon the signatories to remain resolute in executing all its provisions.
IGAD reaffirms its commitment to supporting Ethiopia in its peacebuilding endeavours and urges the international community to continue its support for the agreement’s implementation. IGAD also renews its appeal for a lasting cessation of hostilities in Ethiopia and the broader Horn of Africa region.
