Overview
The objective of this Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) High Level Ministerial Roundtable Discussion on Remittance is to review the linkages between remittances, financing of development, and household food security in IGAD Member Countries with a view to formulating appropriate policies that enhance remittance contribution to local, national and regional economies and while protecting the remittance flows. The other objective is to
assess the impact of challenges that Money Transfer Operators (MTOs) or remittance companies especially after legislation in the US, UK and Australia made it increasingly difficult for people to transfer money to receiving countries.
The event is co-organized by IGAD and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development of Ethiopia (MoFED) with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Key topics to be addressed in the roundtable include:-
1. Possibilities and policies to enhance the development impact of remittances;
2. The role of diaspora as potential powerful agents of development in home countries and the region;
3. The role of remittances in household food security;
4. Mechanism for creating safe, transparent, and legal flows of remittances while addressing national and international concerns and setting the foundation for robust regulations and reliable systems in the financial industry across the IGAD region.
