May 15, 2024, (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, expresses profound concern over the escalating conflict in El Fasher, Sudan. He notes with alarm its severe impact on an already fragile humanitarian situation and the grave threat it poses to the lives of innocent civilians.

Dr. Workneh unequivocally condemns the assaults on critical healthcare infrastructure, such as the recent attack on Babiker Nahar Paediatric Hospital. He notes that such actions not only disrupt the vital supply chain of medical supplies but also hinder the treatment of the injured and vulnerable, including women, children, and displaced people.

Dr. Workneh urgently calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to exercise restraint in accordance with established international norms. He underscores the urgent need for unimpeded access for humanitarian aid delivery to alleviate the suffering of affected populations.

Finally, the Executive Secretary calls upon the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government and the international partners to continue leveraging their influence to compel the parties to lay down their arms, return to the negotiating table, and strive towards sustainable peace in the Republic of Sudan, meeting the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
