September 22, 2024, (New York, U.S.A): The IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, is leading a high-level delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from September 22 to 30, 2024. This year’s assembly, with its pivotal theme of “Unity and Diversity for Advancing Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity, Everywhere and for All,” holds significant relevance to IGAD’s mission.
In line with this theme, the IGAD delegation will engage in critical discussions with member state representatives and senior officials from international organizations, including the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), and key development partners. These meetings will focus on fostering regional cooperation and addressing pressing issues in peace, security, and economic development, which are vital for the future stability of the IGAD region.
During the UNGA proceedings, H.E. Dr. Workneh will participate in various sideline events aimed at promoting IGAD’s peace and security agenda. There will be a particular focus on the ongoing Sudan crisis, which has been ongoing for 17 months NOW. The efforts will be directed towards securing international support and partnerships for a peaceful resolution. H.E. Dr. Workneh’s engagements will aim to elevate IGAD’s role as a regional leader in conflict resolution while advocating for sustainable solutions to address humanitarian and security challenges across the region.
The IGAD delegation will enhance its partnerships with international actors to ensure ongoing cooperation on key priorities. These priorities include advancing sustainable development, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and strengthening regional security mechanisms. Through these strategic engagements, IGAD aims to foster stronger collaborations and support the vision of peace and prosperity in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
