12 February 2025 | Arta, Djibouti – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in collaboration with Djibouti’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, has successfully concluded a two-day National Blue Economy Coordination Platform meeting in Arta.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders from Djibouti’s Blue Economy sectors, including marine, transport, ports, fisheries, environment, and the coast guard. It also engaged cross-cutting ministries and departments such as trade, labour, finance and planning, gender, and academia. The objective was to establish and strengthen the National Blue Economy Coordination Platform to enhance governance and promote the sustainable management of marine resources.
Opening the meeting, Mr Dini Abdallah Omar, Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, emphasised the importance of collaboration among Blue Economy sectors to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of Djibouti’s vast marine resources.
Mr Daher Elmi, IGAD’s Director of Agriculture & Environment Division, highlighted the Blue Economy’s potential to drive economic growth, environmental sustainability, and community resilience across the IGAD region. He reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to supporting Member States in strengthening Blue Economy governance.
Key outcomes from the meeting include the development of a draft National Blue Economy organisational structure, terms of reference (ToR) for the platform, and an action plan to support the implementation of Djibouti’s National Blue Economy Strategy.
This initiative marks a significant step in Djibouti’s efforts to harness the full potential of its marine resources while ensuring long-term sustainability and regional cooperation.
