19th August marks World Humanitarian Day for IGAD, a time to honour aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world. For the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), this day is particularly significant in light of the ongoing challenges faced by Sudan.

Sudan has been grappling with prolonged conflict, political instability, and economic hardships that have severely impacted the lives of millions. The situation in Sudan remains a critical concern, with millions of people in need of humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter, and medical care.

On this World Humanitarian Day, IGAD reaffirms its commitment to supporting Sudan through coordinated efforts that prioritise peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and sustainable development. IGAD calls upon the international community to continue its support for humanitarian initiatives in Sudan, ensuring that aid reaches those most in need.

Today, we pay tribute to the bravery and dedication of humanitarian workers in Sudan and across the IGAD region, who continue to provide life-saving assistance in the face of adversity. Their efforts are crucial in alleviating human suffering and restoring hope for a better future.

IGAD recognises the pressing humanitarian needs in other member states, where conflicts, natural disasters, and health crises persist. The organisation is committed to strengthening regional cooperation to address these challenges, enhancing resilience, and building capacity for effective crisis response. By working together, IGAD and its partners aim to create a more stable and prosperous future for all.

As we observe World Humanitarian Day, let us not only remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty but also renew our resolve to support humanitarian action wherever it is needed. The spirit of solidarity and compassion that drives humanitarian work is more vital than ever in our collective efforts to build a better world.
