March 8, 2024 (DJIBOUTI-VILLE, Djibouti): The intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) colorfully celebrated International Women’s Day, in a special event under the theme Invest in Women: Accelerate progress, today In Djibouti.
The IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD) and a team of Migration and Forced Displacement from all IGAD member states attended the vibrant event.
The IGAD Executive Secretary, in his opening remark, said that the IGAD region women have played a crucial role in peace building, conflict resolution, sustainable development, and fostering social cohesion.
“On this International Women’s Day, let us celebrate the achievements of women, honor their resilience, and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment.” In addition, he described.
Moreover, Dr Workneh explained that the IGAD region women leadership and determination have been instrumental in shaping a better future for our communities and ensuring that the voices of women are heard and respected.
“As we reflect on the progress we have made, we must also acknowledge the challenges that women continue to face. Gender inequality, discrimination, violence, and lack of access to education and healthcare are issues that persist and hinder the full realization of women’s rights and potential.” He stressed.
The Executive Secretary also urged as members of IGAD, all have to stand in solidarity with women everywhere and champion their cause for a more just and equal society.
“Let us pledge to support policies and initiatives that promote gender equality, empower women economically and politically, and ensure their full participation in decision-making processes.” He further emphasized.
The IGAD Migration programmes, among other IGAD initiatives, prioritize women in cross-border areas, offering support through policy development, knowledge-sharing and peer learning, developmental projects including cash for community cohesion.
