October 09, 2023 (ARTA, Djibouti): The Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in collaboration with Ministry of Education of the Republic of Djibouti has conducted Djibouti National consultation workshop with governments and partner agencies on Education towards Implementation of the Djibouti Declaration, today, in Arta, Djibouti.
The main objective of the two- day workshop is to assess on the implementation status of the Djibouti Declaration on Education in Djibouti.
In her opening remarks, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of IGAD Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Madam Fathia Alwan, Director for Health and Social Development Division, highlighted that IGAD, in consultation with Member State experts and our partners, will continue to work to develop a regional commitment based on the lessons of recent years.
“At the heart of our efforts, which we continue to deploy and in close consultation with the national authorities responsible for education and training issues in IGAD Member States, is our commitment to filling in a concerted manner the gaps in policy frameworks relating to education for refugees, returnees and host communities.” She added
Furthermore she emphasized that since the 2019 Global Refugee Forum, the number of refugee children and youth in need of education has almost doubled. Many of these children and young people live in countries where education systems are subject to very serious constraints.
The Director also reminded that since its adoption, the Djibouti Declaration has enjoyed resounding success. This success is also largely a reflection of the unwavering support we continue to receive from our valued partners.
In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Elmi Bouh, president of the regional council of Arta, Republic of Djibouti explained that the national consultation workshop on Education forms the basis for the implementation of the Djibouti Declaration on the Education of Refugees, Returnees and host communities.
Ms. Milena Adnyanata, SIMPI, Advisor, improving Migration and Displacement policies in the IGAD region, said that the government of Germany through GIZ has been a reliable partner at IGAD’s side in implementing the Djibouti Declaration on Refugee Education since its beginning and supports the consultation meeting in Djibouti.
The workshop has brought Participants from relevant government offices of Djibouti, partner agencies and the IGAD Secretariat.
At the end, the National Consultation workshop generated important information and knowledge on the status of implementation of the Djibouti Declaration, which is one of the commitments of IGAD member states and partners and identified gaps and recommendations to filling the IGAD qualification Frameworks; and gained lessons in the implementation of the Djibouti Costed National Plan and provided recommendation on the way forward.
It’s to be remembered that the Djibouti Declaration was adopted in December 2017.
