January 12, 2023 (DJIBOUTI, Djibouti): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, is delighted with the news of the declaration by the Government of Uganda and the World Health Organization that the Ebola outbreak in Uganda has been successfully contained.
The Executive Secretary applauds the leadership, and the elaborate, swift and well-coordinated measures established by the Government of the Republic of Uganda to raise public awareness and invest in systems that contained the outbreak from spreading.
Dr Workneh further commends the healthcare professionals for their response and members of the general public for their vigilance. He paid tribute to the health workers who paid the ultimate price while selflessly discharging duties and extends his sympathies to those whose loved ones perished as a result of the disease.
Finally, the Executive Secretary calls upon member states of IGAD to avail requisite resources to build resilient health systems to cushion the public from disease outbreaks and pandemics.
