February 22, 2022 (Nyala, Sudan): IGAD-MSU concluded a three-day workshop in Nyala, Darfur State -Sudan for local authorities comprising of representatives from local authorities who include but are not limited to local administrators, executive officials, academia, police, CSOs, youth, and women representatives, that work within the thematic areas of Conflict Prevention, Conflict Management, Mediation as well as Peace building.

Being the 1st out of three workshops of this kind in Sudan, the main objective of the workshop was to provide technical assistance and to build capacity of Member States’ local Institutions to engage in Mediation, Preventive Diplomacy and Civilian Peace building.

The workshop provided a platform and space for the participants to engage in discussions on: the concept of conflicts, types of tendencies and their effects; peaceful coexistence, peace building, restorative justice, the role of civil society and local mechanisms in mediation and reconciliation, conflict resolution strategies, as well as international and regional experiences in the work of truth and reconciliation commissions in societies that emerging out of conflict. Additionally, the training workshop enhanced the skills of the participants and increased their knowledge on transitional justice, conflict analysis, and mediation processes.

At the end of the workshop, the participants highlighted the challenges faced in post-conflict peace building phase, and came up with recommendations to ensure the participation of local institutions/conflict resolution committees in reconciliation that promote peaceful coexistence.
