February 8, 2022 (NAIROBI, Kenya): The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Health and Social Development Division Migration Programme today commenced its annual planning workshop in Nairobi, Kenya.

The IGAD Migration Programme planning session aims to enhance coherence among the different migration projects in line with the IGAD Migration Policy and its action plan. The session will review the action plan, share updates as well as priority interventions for 2022 to improve synergies. It further aims to identify linkages between programmes to maximize the impact of IGAD interventions.

The Director of Health and Social Development, Ms Fathia Alwan, in her opening remarks emphasised the importance of this annual exercise aimed at identifying common areas of interventions and coordinating better while enhancing team spirit.

“I am happy to witness the steady growth of our Migration Programme team from a few hands to a large number of staff over the year. We have registered a number of encouraging results,” the Director added. The expansion is not only in the number of programmes and themes but also in the volume of investment.

Ms Fathia thanked the German government and the GIZ for its support to IGAD.

The IGAD Migration Programme is guided by the IGAD Regional Migration Policy Framework which is operationalized in the Migration Action Plan.

Currently the IGAD Migration Program activities comprise finding durable solutions to displacement, migration policy implementation, and coordination, to mention few.
