The livestock sector in the IGAD region same as in the rest of African continent sector is constrained by poor compliance with animal welfare practices due to inadequate public and private sector investments, weak support institutions, inadequate capacity, low public awareness, outdated policies, apathy to law enforcement among others.

Participants of the validation workshop of the regional LITS legal framework, 2nd-3rd May 2016 in Fairway Hotel, Kampala, UgandaThe IGAD regional livestock identification and traceability systems (LITS) legal framework has just been validated in a validation workshop held in May 2nd-3rd, 2016 in Fairway Hotel, Kampala, Uganda. It was attended by about 33 participants who included CVOs, members of the national LITS technical teams in the IGAD MS and experienced consultants on LITS in Africa, in addition to participants from AU-IBAR, OIE, ILRI and North East Africa Livestock Council (NEALCO).

Djibouti’s livestock resources are important approximately 60% of the population who depend on it as a source of livelihood.  There is an estimated 1 million head of sheep and goats and 300,000 cattle in the country.  The sector is faced with many challenges including inadequate government policies to support sustainable livestock production, lack of rainfall to naturally produce pasture/fodder, insufficient groundwater to grow irrigated livestock feed, poorly developed public or private sector animal health, production and breeding services.

As livelihoods of the pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in north-eastern (NE) Kenya are dependent on livestock production, particularly the goats of breed galla, that are kept by the Somali and Boran communities of Kenya; and are among the major livestock types kept by most households that have livestock in the region where livestock and the goat, in particular, are important in the socio-cultural and economic lives of the local people. For the attached importance, a comprehensive goat value chain study was conducted in 3 counties of Garissa, Mandera and Wajir in Kenya to review and assess the current goat value chains in ASALs of north-eastern Kenya in order to identify the critical constraints and explore opportunities for goat value chain development.
