The IGAD Centre for the Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), jointly organized and held the Eastern Africa Chief Veterinary Officers (CVOs) and the 5th joint Epidemiology and Laboratory Annual Coordination Meeting at Naura Springs Hotel in Arusha, Tanzania from 2 to 4 September 2014. The meeting was attended by representatives from 12 countries (Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda,  Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) and participants representing ICPALD/IGAD, AU-IBAR, AU-PANVAC IZSVe Padova, FAO and OIE. The meeting was funded by FAO and ICPALD/IGAD within the framework of the implementation of the European Commission-funded projects entitled “Reinforcing Veterinary Governance in Africa” and “Surveillance of Trade-Sensitive Diseases” in IGAD Member States as well as the USAID-funded project “EPT-1/IDENTIFY”.

Wednesday, 27th, Khartoum, Sudan - The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) recently organized the above national validation workshop in August 27th, 2014 in Khartoum, Sudan. The National Validation Workshop on Animal Identification and Traceability Systems (LITS) Situation Analysis in Sudan is an activity financed under the “Improving animal disease surveillance in support of trade or surveillance for trade-sensitive diseases (STSD) project”. The project is jointly coordinated and implemented by IGAD and AU-IBAR in the IGAD member states.

The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) in collaboration with AUIBAR recently organized the above regional meeting on August 11-12, 2014 in Mombasa, Kenya.  The development of regional framework for the progressive control of peste des petit ruminants (PPR) and other small ruminant diseases (SRDs) in the IGAD region is an activity being financed under the “Improving animal disease surveillance in support of trade or surveillance for trade-sensitive diseases (STSD) project” that is jointly coordinated and implemented by IGAD and AU-IBAR in the IGAD member states.

CODEX Alimentarius Commission (CAC) is one of the standard setting organizations that work to protect the health of the consumers and ensuring fair practices in the food trade. It has been an important engine behind the tremendous growth in global trade of food and agricultural products. IGAD has been granted an observer status in CAC since July 2011 and was represented on the above meeting by Dr. Ameha Sebsibe, head of livestock, ICPALD.
