As it is essential to  strengthen and enhance regional harmonization and coordination of the control of trade-related trans-boundary animal diseases, IGAD/ICPALD in collaboration with AUIBAR organized  a Bilateral Cross-border Meeting for the Kenya-Ethiopia Border from 18th to 20 May 2015 at Nanyuki, Kenya. The main objective was to agree on priority areas of cooperation and develop a draft Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cross-border collaboration regarding disease A total of 32 participants drawn from Ethiopia, Kenya, AU-IBAR, IGAD, FAO and Kenya Red Cross participate on the meeting. Both member states were represented by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry in charge of livestock and representatives of county /regional states along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.

The welcoming remarks were made by Dr Ameha Sebsibe and Dr. Joseph Magona on behalf of ICPALD and AUIBAR Directors respectively. Dr. Kabayo,  Coordinator, PCU (IDDRSI) and Dr Hassan Chaka on behalf of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Ethiopia also made remarks. Finally, Dr Michael Cheruiyot, made the official opening on  behalf of the Director Veterinary Services of Kenya. The bilateral meeting at the end of the three days, achieved the following: identified and agreed the areas of cross-border cooperation on animal health and sanitary measures, developed draft MoU as a framework for cooperation,  roadmap for finalization of the MoU and Terms of Reference for the Steering Committee and the Technical Team

The meeting  participants made recommendations to be followed up and implemented by the two member states (MS), IGAD and AUIBAR. The way forward includes:  IGAD to officially share the draft MoU with MS by 5th June 2015, the two respective Governments to ensure the MoU satisfy their internal processes at MS level and provide feedback by 5th August 2015, validation Meeting for the MoU by 7th September 2015, conclude the MoU by 8th September 2015 and launch steering Committee

The financial support from USAID/EA through the Standards Methods and Procedures in Animal Health (SMPAH) project was acknowledged
