(IGAD – Addis Ababa – May 30, 2019) The meeting of the Parties to discuss the modalities of reconstituting the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Commission was launched today in Juba, South Sudan.

“A functional DDR Commission is central to the overall success of the integrated and cross-cutting transitional security arrangements” said Amb. Ismail Wais, IGAD Special Envoy for South Sudan.

“One of the key tasks to be undertaken in the cantonment is the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of the combatants who are eligible to serve in the new security forces” said Ambassador Wais.

The DDR Commission, mandated by the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), is largely charged with the critical responsibility of managing the social and economic reintegration of ex-combatants.

The structure dynamics, especially the design of the DDR programmatic framework, and more importantly the integrity of the DDR Commission as an institution, will therefore determine the overall success of the DDR process.

“The timely implementation of the agreement significantly revolves around the transitional security arrangements and I appreciate and commend the ITGoNU for the recent disbursement of funds which will expedite the implementation of the pending tasks” said Ambassador Wais.
