IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) organized the meeting with financial support of Regional Pastoral Livelihood and Resilience project (RPLRP) with the objectives of understanding the status of implementation of  grades and standards,  modalities of promotion & popularization; to facilitate lessons sharing on dissemination of grades and standards and agree on the way forward for harmonization of grades and standards  on live animal, meat and hide and skin.

IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) organized a regional meeting to establish and launch the Regional Export Quarantines Network (NEQ). The meeting took place at Grand Holiday Villa Hotel in Khartoum, Sudan from 30 September-Oct 01, 2015. The region is rich in livestock resources, which is the major source of livelihood for millions of agro-pastoralists and pastoralists. The demand for livestock and livestock products in the region, in Africa and in the Middle East is high and raising. In 2014, the region exported 9.6 million of live animals to Middle East and North African countries through the export quarantines.

IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) organized a regional consultative meeting to improve understanding of MERS-CoV and enhance its prevention and control in the Greater Horn of Africa and took place at Grand Holiday Villa Hotel in Khartoum, Sudan from 28-29 September, 2015. The participants were Directors of Veterinary Services, Heads of Veterinary Epidemiology Units, Public Health representatives, Regional Support Laboratory for Eastern Africa (NAHDIC), Managers of quarantine stations and camel traders from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan and Sudan. Also in attendance were representatives from AU-IBAR, FAO-ECTAD Eastern Africa, ILRI, ICPALD, IGAD Economic Cooperation and Social Development and the OIE. A participant from Somaliland was also in attendance. The workshop was officially opened by Dr. kamal; under Secretary ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rangelands; Sudan.

Non-compliance with world animal and plant health and food safety standards is deemed as a major barrier to accessing international agricultural trade and thereby denying countries the exploitation of the competitive advantage of their locally produced commodities, thus missing out on the potential benefits. The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD), in collaboration with African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), organized a national training workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from July 20-22. FINAL COMMUNIQUE

The sixth VET-GOV Programme Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting was held at the SOFITEL Mauritius Imperial Resort in Port Louis, Mauritius, on 22nd and 23rd July 2015. It was attended by the Steering Committee Members and other participants from AU-IBAR, OIE, FAO, EISMV, EAFF, Midzi agricultural Development Services Pty Ltd, BRENTEC VACCINES, RECs (COMESA, EAC, ECCAS, IGAD and SADC) and representatives from countries such as Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius,  and Zambia, (List of participants: Annex 1):

The meeting was officially opened by Honourable Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, Minister of Agro Industry and Food Security, Republic of Mauritius, following remarks from Dr. Janet Edeme, Head of Rural Economy Division on behalf of the Commissioner of DREA, Dr. Baboucarr Jaw, representing the Director AU-IBAR, Mr. David Mwangi Njuru, representing the EC; Prof. Cheikh Ly representing the FAO and Dr. Karim Tounkara representing the OIE.
