On 13 October, a High-level delegation from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) visited Puntland State of Somalia to hold bilateral discussions and also witness the signing of a landmark agreement with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS). The delegation was led by Amb. Mohamed Affey, IGAD’s Special Envoy for Somalia and included Ato Daniel Yifru, IGAD’s Senior Peace and Security Adviser, and Also Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, Senior Political Officer.

 

Amb. Affey congratulated President Abdiwelli Mohamed Ali on his election as Puntland President in January and commended him for his promotion of good governance and economic development and good neighbourliness with other regions of Somalia.  He also conveyed the president well wishes from the ES of IGAD, AMB. Mahboub Maalim.

On his part, President Abdiwelli welcomed the delegation and reiterated special relations between his government and IGAD. He called upon IGAD to be more engaged with Somalia and open up a liaison office in Puntland that will help address issues of security and institution building. The president also commended IGAD for its efforts in helping find durable peace in Somalia.
