The Permanent Observer Mission of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to the United Nations was established to strengthen IGAD’s engagement with the United Nations and amplify the voice of the IGAD region in global policy processes. As the regional bloc representing eight Member States in the Horn of Africa, IGAD plays a critical role in advancing peace, security, development, and integration across a region that is home to over 261 million people.
The Mission’s primary function is to serve as a liaison between IGAD and the United Nations system, ensuring that IGAD’s priorities are reflected in international discourse, decisions, and partnerships.
With observer status at the UN, the Mission participates in key meetings, high-level forums, and policy consultations, offering technical input and promoting multilateral collaboration.
