July 29, 2026 (Djibouti, Djibouti): The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, congratulates the Government and people of the Republic of Uganda following the official declaration that the country is Ebola free.

The Executive Secretary commends the Government of Uganda, the Ministry of Health, frontline health workers, communities, and partners for their swift and coordinated response, which successfully contained the outbreak and prevented further transmission.

While welcoming this important milestone, H.E. Dr. Workneh called on Uganda to sustain strong surveillance, preparedness, and rapid response measures to safeguard against future outbreaks. He underscored the importance of continued regional cooperation in addressing cross border public health threats.

The Executive Secretary reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to supporting its Member States in strengthening epidemic preparedness, disease surveillance, and coordinated responses to emerging and re-emerging health threats across the region.
